Building Partnerships in Education – Using Effective Communication Skills

This presentation will provide parents of students with disabilities with an overview of key communication strategies for navigating conversations about their child’s special education services and programs. Participants will learn how to prepare effectively for school meetings and practice skills for active, positive participation in the special education process. 2025- ASL Classes for Families of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children

We are excited to announce that we are re-launching our FREE beginner American Sign Language classes! This six-week course is designed to give families of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children foundational ASL skills to communicate within the home and with other members of the Deaf /HH community. Participants MUST email or call Jeanine Byrnes at j.byrnes@taconicresources.org or 845-452-3913 ext. 103 and RSVP by July 23rd, 2025.

Housing Advocacy Information Session

Interested in Affordable Housing Options?

Please register in advance and join us via Zoom for an information session to learn about housing advocacy for individuals with disabilities, including those who are transitioning from residential settings such as skilled nursing facilities, assisted living, homeless shelters etc.

Date: Thursday, July 31st, 2025 🕒 Time: 1:30-2:30 PM
📢 Topics include:

  • Different types of housing opportunities
  • Independent living skills that may be needed for everyday life
  • Accessibility considerations, self-advocacy skills, and knowing your rights
  • Support services and available resources.

Mental Health & Youth with Disabilities

Spotting early warning signs and supporting open communication

Two sessions of this workshop will be offered on Monday, June 23rd, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM and on Wednesday, June 25th 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM.

Children and adolescents with disabilities are 20-30% more likely to develop co-existing mental health issues compared to their peers, and they may face challenges in communicating thoughts and feelings, developing appropriate strategies for support, and creating accessible outlets for emotional regulation. At this virtual workshop and parent network event, parents/caregivers, families, and service providers can find support from others with similar experiences caring for youth with disabilities! Identify early signs of mental illness and address concerning thoughts and behaviors. Connect with the TRI Parent Empowerment Program support network. Hear advice, support, and perspectives from other families. Learn how to have safe and open conversations about mental health with children and adolescents with disabilities.
