TRI on Radio Kingston!

Patricia Lucio-Penn, Bilingual Spanish Special Education Advocate with Taconic Resources for Independence (TRI), was pleased to be asked to speak with Mariel Fiori of Radio Kingston and La Voz on the last segment of their Day of Education and Family on 11/13/24 https://radiokingston.org/en/broadcast/la-voz-con-mariel-fiori/episodes/our-solution-to-alcoholism

“We discussed resources and stressed the importance of families advocating for their children’s educational rights to free and appropriate public education programs and how to share parents’ concerns with the school personnel and school districts. Hispanic communities sometimes tend to not question teachers or school officials and wait for them to tell families when and what needs to be done if issues or problems arise. I provided resources available through TRI and RCAL and stressed the importance of not waiting. If parents have concerns that are impacting their child’s learning and these have been communicated to the child’s teacher and there is no progress, move to the next steps and start the process of requesting evaluations and additional support, including if needed seeking Special Education advocacy support.”

Patricia was invited back to Radio Kingston to speak with Mariel Fiori and will visit in person on 12/17/24 at 10:14 a.m. Discussions will include information on the new Parent Empowerment Program and Support Group, which is part of our Special Education Advocacy Program at Taconic Resources for Independence Inc.

DUTCHESS DISABILITY RIGHTS ORGANIZATION ACKNOWLEDGES TIVOLI FOR LANDMARK ZONING AMENDMENT

Poughkeepsie – Taconic Resources for Independence, Inc. (TRI), Dutchess County’s leading disability advocacy organization, will be holding a press conference on November 14 to acknowledge Village of Tivoli Mayor, Joel Griffth for his leadership in implementing a first of its kind zoning amendment to promote compliance with the ADA within Tivoli buildings, sites and facilities. County Executive Sue Serino along with several public officials and local advocates will be present to provide their remarks. The event will take place at the TRI office at 82 Washington Street in Poughkeepsie at 1:30.

The Site Plan Approval of Tivoli’s Village Code was formally adopted in August and charges the Tivoli Planning Board to perform assessments of all site plan applications of public accommodation for ADA compliance consideration. Proposals for changes in use, new buildings or alterations that result in extending area or height shall be referred to the Village Engineer and/or Code Enforcement Official to ensure they meet Uniform Code requirements for accessibility for individuals with disabilities to the maximum extent possible.

“The Village of Tivoli is proud to assert the importance of inclusivity for people of all abilities in our community.  We have both a legal and a moral responsibility to promote compliance with the ADA. While Tivoli, like many communities, still has a long way to go, by codifying this assertion and assuming that responsibility, we are both broadcasting our belief and institutionalizing a mechanic for positive change,” says Mayor Griffith.

“People with disabilities continue to face numerous accessibility barriers on a daily basis and feel excluded from being able to fully access places of public accommodation in their communities,” says TRI Executive Director Lisa Tarricone.  “The creation and passage of Tivoli’s Site Plan Approval under the leadership of Mayor Joel Griffth promotes the message of inclusion – not exclusion – to not only residents of Tivoli with disabilities, but also serves as a model to every municipality across the county.”

Dutchess Disability Advocacy Partnership (DDAP) – a grassroots ADA advocacy component of TRI – offers technical assistance to Dutchess towns and villages to increase access to retail stores, restaurants, municipal entities and other places of public accommodation.  DDAP co-chair John Rossi says “DDAP has begun taking a close look at the zoning codes of every municipality in the County and it is our intention to pursue similar legislative amendments mirroring the Tivoli amendment.”

Taconic Resources for Independence, Inc. (TRI) was founded in 1986 and is Dutchess County’s leading disability advocacy organization, dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities to lead self-directed lives. TRI works within the community to provide disability awareness and advocacy for the removal of barriers.

Employment and Training Opportunities in the Clean Energy Sector

New York State is embarking on a transition to an inclusive, clean energy-powered economy. All residents, businesses, and communities across the state will have access to new opportunities to benefit from this transition including clean energy careers, home improvements, and even rebates for businesses and personal transportation. But there’s a lot of information out there, and people may not know where to start.

To help New Yorkers access and navigate these opportunities, NYSERDA created the Regional Clean Energy Hubs. Clean Energy Hubs connect people to the clean energy economy. Each economic region in the state has a Hub of its own. You can find yours here: https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Regional-Clean-Energy-Hubs/Find-Your-Clean-Energy-Hub-Today

One role of the Hubs is to facilitate an effective clean energy workforce pipeline, which empowers job seekers, improves diversity and inclusion in the field, supports local businesses, and enables New York State to physically build the infrastructure needed to reach its clean energy goals.

As experts in empowering and accommodating people with disabilities, it’s important for your local Hub to hear from you! An improved clean energy workforce must prioritize people who have historically been shut out of such careers. It is known that unemployment and underemployment are significantly worse for people with disabilities than people without. New York will create an estimated 200,000+ jobs through the clean energy transition, which makes this an excellent opportunity to build the necessary knowledge and accommodations into training and hiring from the outset.

If you are located in the Mid-Hudson Valley, you may reach out to Cal Trumann (cal@nyforcleanpower.org) to begin discussing involvement in the regional Clean Energy Hub’s workforce development efforts. Elsewhere in the state, please consult the NYSERDA website to find your Hub representative.
